What this page covers

Clear numbers, with the source beside them.

Drivers, writers and local businesses use repair statistics to put everyday dents, hail damage and insurance decisions in context. Each figure below links to the original publisher and notes what it does and does not measure. Paintless dent repair is a specialty within body repair, so nationwide sources do not report it as a separate category.

How to read the numbers

A claim average is not a repair estimate.

Insurance averages combine many types of damage and many markets. A simple door ding, a hail-damaged hood and a collision repair do not call for the same work. For an individual vehicle, the condition of the paint, the metal, the location of the damage and safe access behind the panel still shape the right repair path.

When a dent has intact factory paint, paintless dent repair may be an option. When the finish is cracked, the metal is sharply creased or the panel cannot be safely accessed, a different repair approach may be needed.

Methodology & sources

Built to be cited, not padded.

Method

This page uses nationally published figures from government agencies and established insurance research organizations. Every figure is dated by the source’s reported data year. We keep the page focused on statistics that connect directly to dent, hail, collision or automotive body repair context.

Figures are reviewed roughly monthly, or earlier when a core source issues a meaningful update. Links are checked during each review.
